Kansas City, Missouri – A 68 year-old male was found dead with three others injured on Sunday after the Family Dollar building collapsed at Midtown 3726 Broadway. KCPD and KCFD crews arrived before 2:45 p.m. and were faced with the partial collapse of the building's front facade.
Kansas City Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Hopkins announced during the press conference, “Unfortunately, there was one fatality. That fatality is a male individual, African American. Currently the Kansas City Police Department is en route with their investigative team, they will be taking over the investigation due to the fatality.”
Among the injured was a 50 year-old female who was critically injured and two others who were treated on the scene were released after refusing further medical treatment. Family and neighbors who lived near the area were found in tears, while the partner of the 68 year-old man who passed away found herself unsure what to do on her own.
There are several possible causes why this has happened, including poor structural engineering, faulty architectural design, or lack of maintenance. One report online mentioned that people saw the building “leaning” over during the last week, showing possible neglect in maintaining the building. Neighbors reported the sign “dangling” just before the collapse. We are reminded of a notorious tragedy in Kansas City where two suspended walkways in the Hyatt Regency Hotel collapsed, leading to the injury of 216 people and the death of 114 people, including employees and guests.
Broadway will be closed from the 36th to the 38th streets for several hours during the investigation and for public works to clear the debris from the roadway.
